Rolex Datejust 36mm Burlwood Dial - Ref. 16018

For sale is a beautiful vintage Rolex Datejust Ref. 16018 from 1983, crafted entirely from solid 18k yellow gold and featuring an exceptionally attractive factory burlwood dial.

One of the more unusual configurations of the classic Datejust, the combination of a solid gold case and natural wood dial gives this example a warmth and character quite unlike the more conventional dials of the period.

The Burlwood Dial
The standout feature of this watch is undoubtedly its factory burlwood dial. Rolex experimented with a number of exotic and natural dial materials during this era, with wood dials remaining among the most distinctive.

The natural burlwood displays a beautifully intricate grain, with swirling patterns, knots and variations running throughout the surface. Its rich reddish-brown and chestnut tones change subtly depending on the light, while the irregular grain ensures that no two wood dials have precisely the same appearance.

Applied yellow gold baton hour markers, matching gold hands and the applied Rolex coronet contrast beautifully against the warm wood background. The date aperture at 3 o’clock is accompanied by the characteristic Cyclops magnification.

The Case
The classic 36mm Oyster case is crafted from solid 18k yellow gold and paired with Rolex’s signature 18k yellow gold fluted bezel.

The combination of the warm gold case and deep brown burlwood creates an especially cohesive appearance, while the sharp fluting of the bezel provides a brighter polished contrast to the organic texture of the dial.

Strap & Buckle
The watch is presented on a generic tan leather strap with contrasting stitching, chosen to complement the natural brown tones of the burlwood dial.

Importantly, the strap is fitted with an original Rolex 18k yellow gold pin buckle, complete with the Rolex coronet and visible 18k gold hallmarks.

Movement
Powering the Ref. 16018 is Rolex’s automatic self-winding movement, offering the robust and dependable performance for which the Datejust has long been known.
