For sale is a vintage 1972 Rolex Day-Date Ref. 1803, crafted in solid 18k yellow gold and featuring a particularly unusual matte cream dial with black enamel detailing to the hour markers and hands.
The Day-Date
Introduced in 1956, the Rolex Day-Date was the first wristwatch to display both the day of the week written in full and the date. Produced exclusively in precious metals, it quickly became Rolex’s flagship dress watch and remains one of the most recognisable designs in the brand’s history.
The Ref. 1803 is perhaps the quintessential vintage Day-Date, combining the classic 36mm proportions, acrylic crystal and beautifully detailed dial designs that define Rolex production of this period.
The Dial
The standout feature of this example is its distinctive matte cream dial, which has a soft, warm appearance that pairs beautifully with the surrounding yellow gold.
Most unusual are the applied yellow gold baton hour markers. Rather than the luminous inserts normally associated with this style of dial, the centres are finished with black enamel, creating a striking dark line through each marker. This detailing is carried through to the matching yellow gold hour and minute hands, which feature corresponding black enamel centres.
The result is an exceptionally attractive combination, with the black accents providing sharp contrast against the understated cream surface while complementing the warmth of the 18k yellow gold case.
The signature arched day aperture sits at 12 o’clock, with the date positioned at 3 o’clock beneath the Cyclops magnifier. A finely printed outer minute track completes the dial and adds to its unmistakably vintage character.
The Case
The classic 36mm Oyster case is crafted from solid 18k yellow gold and is paired with Rolex’s signature fluted bezel. As visible in the photographs, the case retains attractive definition through the lugs, while the sharply faceted bezel provides a beautiful contrast of light against the softer matte finish of the dial.
The acrylic crystal further enhances the vintage appearance of the watch, giving the dial the warmth and depth characteristic of early Day-Date references.
The Strap
The watch is presented on a generic black leather strap, which provides a particularly elegant contrast against the yellow gold case and keeps the focus firmly on the unusual dial.
It is finished with a gold-tone Rolex ‘style’ buckle, complementing the overall appearance of the watch while maintaining its traditional dress-watch aesthetic.
The Movement
Powering the Ref. 1803 is the Rolex Calibre 1556 automatic movement, a chronometer-certified movement and one of Rolex’s celebrated vintage Day-Date calibres.
